US Army NCO Sword
Army NCO Sword
The US Army NCO Sword was adopted by the US Army Ordnance Dept in 1840. They contracted with S&K for 1000 of these swords. S&K are renounced sword makers who were located in Solingen, Prussia. In 1844 the contract was awarded to the Ames Mfg. Co. to be the official supplier of this sword.
This sword was worn by US Army Non-commissioned Officers and has seen service is many famous campaigns, including the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the Spanish American War.
This sword has a long straight and heavy single-edged blade with a rudimentary false edge which makes it more suitable as a thrusting weapon rather than a slashing weapon. It has a single broad fuller which runs from the ricasso to within 1 1/2 inches of the point giving the blade more strength while reducing weight. The brass hilt is flawlessly cast and provides weight in the grip for balance. The grip is wrapped in wire, and sports a globular shaped pommel. The knuckle-bow is a strip of flattened brass , and the counter guard is a double kidney-shaped casting integrally cast as part of the counter guard. The sword is 37 1/2" in length, and the blade is 31 3/4" in length and 7/8 inches wide at the thickest part near the hilt.
