Army NCO Sword (with Leather Scabbard)

US Army NCO Sword

This is the regulation spec US Army NCO Saber. This high quality NCO Saber features a tempered steel blade with a mirror finish. The hilt is cast brass, the grip is ribbed in imitation of wire wrapping and is also made of solid brass, the pommel is globular in shape, and the knuckle-bow is a flattened strip. It has a double kidney-shaped counter guard, integrally cast and an overall length of 37 1/2" with a blade length of 31 3/4" and 7/8" wide at the hilt.

A single broad fuller is running from the ricasso to within 1 1/2 inches of the point. The hilt is cast brass, the grip is ribbed in imitation of wire wrapping and is also made of solid brass, the pommel is globular in shape, the knuckle-bow is a flattened strip, there is a double kidney-shaped counter guard, cast integrally with it. 37 1/2" overall length, blade is 31 3/4" in length and 7/8 inches wide at the hilt. This sword has a long straight and heavy single-edged blade with a rudimentary false edge.

In August of 1840, the US Army Ordnance Dept. contracted with S&K, Solingen, Prussia for 1000 swords of this pattern. Later, Ames Mfg. Co. received their first contract in 1844 to make this sword. This sword was worn by American sergeants during such great conflicts as the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the Spanish American War.

Mr
This is the finest version of the most authentic 1840 NCO Sword out there. For years I have presented the NCO Sword to Soldiers during promotions. In that time I have bought many versions from many companies. This model from this manufacturer, through this company is the best. It sounds strange but I can get this exact sword made in the same factory in India from other places (slightly cheaper) but these are better and packaged better. Aside from that, the way I see it there are three categories: Windlass, Depeeka (could be spelled wrong), and German. Depeekas are the worst quality, too long, but are very inexpensive. Windlass, which is what this is, are good, most authentic, bit slightly more in cost. Of the Windlass swords, these from this company are the best that I've seen. Finally, there are the German swords that are being passed off as US Army 1840 NCO swords. These are the super fine swords that are even being pushed as authentic, even by a major military supplier, but are in fact German Infantry Officer Swords. These cost in excess of $300. They're pretty but why pay extra for incorrect?
